It always amazes me that FITNESS is a multi-billion greenback industry… Yet a solid, concise and common definition of fitness is difficult to nail down.
Just ask someone participating in a physical fitness program, and even someone within the fitness business for that matter, to offer you a transparent definition of fitness.
You will most likely be met with the “deer caught within the headlights” stare accompanied by nonsensical stammering.
If you do get an answer, it will more than likely be slanted toward the specific abilities of the person asked.
For example…
A marathon runner will outline fitness by way of muscular and cardiorespiratory endurance… A power-lifter will define fitness when it comes to absolute strength… A bodybuilder will define fitness in terms of muscle size and definition… etc.
But the overwhelming majority of people participating in a physical fitness program usually are not professional athletes involved with the improvement of only one physical ability.
Therefore, basing your definition of fitness on one specific physical skill does not lead to a common definition of fitness.
The truth is, your bodily fitness success will probably be determined by your definition of fitness… So take a while to be sure you have a transparent fitness definition.

The degree of competence and skill to perform in ALL the physical skills of cardiorespiratory endurance, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, accuracy and toughness.
I can already hear the criticism from the athletic crowd… You cannot “maximize” the efficiency of all the physical abilities on this fitness definition at the same time.
And they are absolutely right!
Fitness just isn’t about the “maximization” of 1 particular physical talent at one explicit point in time, but relatively the “optimization” of all physical abilities at any given time.
Fitness is a compromise of all the different physical abilities that make up human activity.
Look at it this way…
Let’s say all the physical skills were examined separately.
Some specialized athletes would rating very high on some physical skills… and really low on others.
But a person that personified true, universal fitness would score effectively on all of the physical skills… without necessarily being the perfect at any one skill.
Here is an EXCELLENT Fitness Definition…
The acceptable and deliberate compromise of competence and skill to perform in ALL the areas of cardiorespiratory endurance, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, accuracy and toughness to produce optimum efficiency results under the greatest amount of circumstances.
Not only is common fitness a compromise of all of the physical abilities… but it is the over-all capacity to integrate the entire physical skills and move from one ability to the subsequent in a seamless trend to successfully complete a task.
So, what would adopting this definition of health do for you?
Your physical fitness coaching program could be assessed according to how effectively it “optimized” all of the physical skills and not simply how well it “maximized” one specific skill at the expense of all others.
Basically, structuring your physical training to improve all the physical abilities of this health definition would allow you to greatly improve over-all physical efficiency in a wider variety of activities.
