Celebrities have to stand a number of tests on their way to ultimate fame and popularity. The most difficult ones are the test of money and time. Some celebrities get so overwhelmed with the huge money they get that they lose it. They go off track. The can become drug or alcohol addicts or go onto the everlasting money expenditure ‘trip’. By the time they spend the money, they find out that they are forgotten, the best years are wasted and it’s extremely hard to get back though some still manage to do that.
The test of time is even harder. Usually celebrities remain stars from the moment they get this status and till the day they die. The fame of some celebrities goes far beyond that. They can be long gone but it feels like they are still here with us. That shows how great public fascination with celebrities can be.
There is another kind of celebrities – the ‘fleeting’ kind. Andy Warhol called it ’15 minutes of fame’. The history remembers a number of such celebrities. These stars fade away soon after they start shining.
The reasons why some people become popular are different. It’s not always due to talent or outstanding skills. Sometimes it’s a scandal or even a crime that puts people into the focus of public attention making them celebrities for those ‘15 minutes’. Years ago people talked hours away about a 16-year old girl who shot her boyfriend’s wife in the head. She got imprisoned for 6 years. For her that was a real splash of popularity (if you can call it so). But now people don’t even remember her name!
Political and sex scandals are also a great way to win 15 minutes of fame. When Monika Lewinsky revealed the details of her sex affair with President Clinton she became super popular. She was everywhere: on news, in newspapers and magazines, TV shows and radio programs etc. Everybody knew who she was. But now nobody knows where she is. No popularity for her any more!
There have been some interesting ’15 minutes of fame’ occurrences in music sphere too. Carl Douglas once sang a Kung Fu song. It was ridiculous and it never hit any charts. But curiously enough that song was frequently used for a great number of Kung Fu movies. But nobody remembers the guy who sang it!
Well obviously crimes, fabrications, setups and unprofessionalism are not good ways to reach that magnetic celebrity status. Going down the road of showy yet tasteless actions is not rewarding. Thus, all one can hope for is those morbid 15 minutes. That’s all! The list of fleeting celebrities is very long. It makes us appreciate those celebrities who managed to stand all the tests and grew into solid stars!
