People are so fond of these movers of popular culture that they try to copy their habits, their tastes, their hairstyles and of course, their clothing styles. That is why modern people, especially women, wear some strange and not quite comfortable things. Since the time when Madonna wore a corset (in a rather strange way, I must admit) all women decided that this part of underwear is worth their attention. I am perfectly sure that this clothing has become an inseparable part of mass culture as we can see it everywhere: on the perfect figures of celebrities both as underwear and evening dress. In fact, none other part of clothing is regarded as the sign of greatest women sexuality. So, why corset is so popular nowadays?

Corset’s Ancient History

It is quite interesting to know that the first recorded use of corsets comes to us from ancient Crete. They say that Cretan woman were generally bare breasted, but they wore a hip and waist corset. In fact, almost in the similar way corsets were also worn in Rome and Greece.

Corset’s Modern History

It is true fact that the corset has never gone totally out of fashion. However, it is true that its popularity has risen and fallen for several times generally based on mass culture. The reappearance and disappearance of the corset in fashion of our century seem to be connected to some cyclical changing in female shapes. It is general fast that the women waist can be either enhanced or concealed.

Indeed, the square and flat dresses of the 1920s were an ideal canvas to show the sophisticated and artistic motifs of the period of Jazz Age. Therefore in order to gain the flapper look, corsets were abandoned for something much softer that was able to flatten the female forms.

In addition a Victorian revival which was well known for bodices and soft corsets on evening gowns made popular in the 1930’s. This clothing style change was largely enhanced by popular films like Little Women and Gone with the Wind.

The rise of the corset as outerwear began in the twentieth century. This pop culture tendency has been driven by, as I have already mentioned, the rise of Madonna popularity in the 1980’s.

These days, traditional corsets are worn as outerwear. Corsets are considered to be perfect for a night at a club or on the town. Some ladies combined it with a jacket. Some modern fashion designers include corset-like items in their designs.
