As a “foodie”, I absolutely have an appreciation for the incredibly delicious culinary concoctions created by the professional chefs at upscale restaurants. And while it is typically very exciting to taste new cuisines and experience unique, finely prepared dishes- sometimes when I go out to eat- all I need is a basic cheeseburger- prepared fast and greasy with just the basic condiments. There is something incredibly comforting about a tasty burger, right off the grill- especially in the summertime.

One of my personal favorite summertime burger traditions involves the periodic rides me and my friends make to our favorite cheeseburger establishment- the All American Burger in Seaford, NY (Long Island). A Long Island staple, my introduction to the All American came as student while taking Driver’s Ed class in High School. This eating place is so well established on Long Island that all of the driving instructors at my High School would take all of their students to the All American during at least one of the lessons. Once we all passed our driving tests, trips to All American became a regular activity and as the weather got warmer, we’d go on weekly “All American runs” as a big group.

A small shack on Merrick Road, the All American is amazing because of its simplicity and uniqueness. In a world where a lot of people choose to eat burgers at MacDonald’s or Burger King, it’s refreshing to see such a simple menu of basic fast food (cheeseburger, hot dog, fries, shakes etc.) in an authentic, non-corporate, and intimate setting. But this unassuming, extremely small business produces burgers with an extremely big taste.

The All American Burgers are fresh and juicy patties and served hot off the grill with melting, molten cheese dripping over the sides. The french fries are just as fresh and definitely taste like authentic potatoes (unlike the horrific imposters served at Burger King and MacDonald’s) and are clearly the obvious compliment to a tasty burger.

With low prices and outrageous burgers, shakes and fries, the All American often has long lines out the door- especially on warm summer evenings. The small number of tables and benches that make up the outside seating patio are generally full and bursting with hungry patrons chowing down on a greasy burger in the sunshine. But even when the line is long, there’s nothing better than hanging out with a few friends, while eating an amazingly juicy burger in the warm summer air. All American Burger is without a doubt one of my favorite places to eat.
