I have worked in the personal development business for almost sixteen years and, to be frank, a get somewhat peed off when I see people, who are a danger to themselves, suddenly proclaiming themselves to be a life coach because they completed a couple of days’ course or get some online accreditation. Being a life coach is a serious business. A life coach is well placed to mess with client’s minds – and there are plenty of them who do just that with terrible consequences. People ‘follow their gut’ – a phrase I have come across too many times – or people ‘go with the flow’ – another choice phrase. But I often find myself in the position of having to help someone pick up the pieces of their lives having followed this half-baked so-called professional advice.
I do a two-day personal development course – I’ve been doing it since 1996 – and I explain to clients that I’ve given them all the tools that are needed to do whatever to achieve their goals, whether that’s becoming financially independent, find their ‘soul mate’ (whatever that means!) or simply discover happiness. However, the problem with many people is that they want someone to take them by the hand. As a child, your parents led you by the hand – your teachers did the same, perhaps not literally. Now that you’re an adult, you’ve got to grow up. It’s time to take responsibility for your life – on one else can. It’s time to stop depending on the supports provided by anyone else and start doing things for yourself – I think that’s what self help and self improvement mean.
You need to realize that the only person who can take control of your mind is you. More to the point, you need to understand that, if you don’t get inside your head and take charge, nothing’s going to change for you . Over seven decades of research in the science of psychology proves that the normal mind controls the normal person and that this so-called normal mind is haunted by the ghosts of our formative years. Neuro-psychological research also tells us that, when we take control of our minds, we can enter what athletes describe as the ‘peak performance zone’ and change our lives. But nobody else can do that for you.
You’ve got to whip your wild mind into shape. It’s wild because, currently, it’s a law unto itself. It’s consumed by your past and worried about your future – and you’re stuck, helpless, in between. You’ve got to grab the levers of power – tell your mind who’s boss. Train your mind to focus on the here and now – the bit that your mind won’t focus on at all – the time and place that you actually live, where risks are taken, great journeys are embarked upon.
And, now that you’ve got to the end of this article, take ten minutes to, quite literally, smell the roses. Close your eyes, experience the sounds of the real world, the smells of now, the feel of your own breathing – the reality of the moment. For, if you don’t come to your senses, life will stay put.
